Over the next decade, African states will face mounting threats to their legitimacy and sovereignty, with some becoming client states of outside patrons and others gaining leverage from competition over critical minerals, demographics, and geography. To remain relevant on a continent that will hold a fifth of humanity by 2035, the United States must leave its anachronistic and dismissive ideas about Africa behind.
